What to Know about the Modern Mansard Roof

mansard roof design

The almost flat slope means that it will not cope well with heavy rainfall and can result in leakages in the roof. Moreover, in areas of heavy snowfall, the result would be far more disastrous. A crucial factor to consider for such conversions, particularly in urban or high-noise areas, is sound insulation. Implementing effective noise reduction strategies can significantly improve the comfort and utility of the transformed space. Thus, the Mansard roof not only provides physical expandability but also flexibility to adapt to evolving living or working needs over time. In the process of building a new home, choosing the right roof is one of the most important decisions you will need to make.

Mansard roofs offer an elegant look that can be difficult to match with styles like flat or gable roofs. They also typically feature dormer windows on their lower slope, allowing in plenty of natural sunlight. Dormer windows are a vital part of the roof architecture, so they're very common. Windows brighten up dim attics, promote airflow, and give a stylish appearance from the outside. Mansard roofs provide extra loft space compared to hip or gable roof designs, making them an attractive option in terms of aesthetics. While putting a new spin on this traditional roof style, many people have become interested in applying modern roofing solutions.

Vaulted Ceilings 101: Types

Although this roofing style is not commonly used in traditional homes, you will find it in many barn houses. If you are still having trouble visualizing this roofing style, we suggest you take a look at the illustration and image below. Some styles may slightly increase the top’s slope to prevent water pooling. The topmost portion of the Mansard roof may be almost flat or completely flat. A flat roof will need a membrane roof system to protect the interior structure from pooling water.

The additional insulation provided by a mansard roof can be particularly beneficial in colder climates, where energy costs can be high. They were first popularized in France in the 17th century and have been used extensively in the construction of grand townhouses, chateaus, and public buildings like churches and government buildings. Mansard roofs are particularly prominent in Parisian architecture, where they are used extensively in the construction of the grand boulevards. Mansard roofs in French architecture are often characterized by their unique design variations and the use of ornate dormer windows. In recent years, the roof has decreased in usage due to height restrictions in some areas. Mansard roofs are much more common in large buildings rather than single-family homes.

It was a good roof option in both rural and urban areas; however, in urban settings it was valued because it allowed vertical expansion of space without the need to increase land use. In this comprehensive guide, we delve into the world of mansard roofs, exploring their history, design elements, benefits, and considerations for homeowners. The cost of a mansard roof may vary depending on the material, size, and complexity of the design. However, as a general rule, you can expect to pay more for a Mansard roof than you would for other types of roofs. So if budget is a concern, you may want to consider another type of roof.

The roofs are also susceptible to damage as compared to other ones, so that could be a significant reason in their regular maintenance. The concept of the Mansard roof is suitable for both urban and rural areas. Also, the construction is pretty simple, with the requirements of a few materials.

When the Second Empire style was applied to residential architecture, builders created interesting innovations. Trendy and practical mansard roofs were placed atop otherwise modest structures. Houses in a variety of styles were given the characteristic Second Empire feature.

Finally, obtain multiple quotes to compare pricing and understand the scope of work proposed by different contractors. Opting for a mid-range offer is often the sweet spot between quality workmanship and cost. Ensure they are licensed, insured, and adhere to the building codes specific to your area. This legal groundwork will protect you in case of accidents or issues during the roofing process. Mansard roofs have a few distinct advantages that can make them a great choice for your home.

Protecting and enhancing the modern home extends far beyond interior design and trendy furniture selections. Your home’s roofing plays a crucial role, shielding a home from the elements while also contributing significantly to its curb appeal. Given the complexity and weight of mansard roofs, ensuring adequate structural support is crucial for long-term durability. Mansard roofs can be more expensive than traditional roofs due to their complex design and the additional materials required. Selecting the right roofer is akin to picking the perfect hat for an outfit—it needs to fit just right and suit your specific needs. Start by looking for local roofing contractors with experience in mansard roof installation and repair.

Of course, a flat roof is not ideal for all places or buildings, particularly in areas that receive significant amounts of rain or snow (snow in particular can be an issue because of its weight on a roof). However, a flat roof is ideal for warmer, dryer areas or in situations where an occupiable roof is desired.

Their nearly flat top also leads to potential water pooling issues if not properly attended to, which increases the risk of leaks. Moreover, in regions with heavy snowfall, the low-pitched sides of the roof may gather excessive snow, posing a structural risk unless properly reinforced. Thus, while visually appealing and practical for adding space, mansard roofs require careful consideration regarding location and upkeep. The double-sloped design of the mansard roof creates more headroom in the upper floor, making it a more comfortable living space. This additional space can be used for various purposes like creating extra bedrooms, offices, or even recreational areas. The straight Mansard roof is a more classic version of the original design.

The greatest virtue of the mansard is that it can allow an extra full story of space without raising the height of the formal facade, which stops at the entablature. The mansard roof can assume many different profiles, with some being steeply angled, while others are concave, convex, or s-shaped. Sometimes mansards with different profiles are superimposed upon one another, especially on towers. For most Second Empire buildings, the mansard roof is the primary stylistic feature and the most commonly recognised link to the style's French roots. Mansard roofs are a popular choice for commercial and public buildings – we’ve mentioned several here.

Elements of Design: Understanding the 7 Elements of Design

form as an element of design

With 12 years of experience in the design industry, I lead my own design studio and collaborate with other creatives on branding and editorial design projects. Google’s design language has become so popular and effective that it’s now ubiquitous. And when it comes down to it, the concepts of Surfaces and Cards are just ingenious expressions of Form. And this is the crux of why Form and Mass is so important for designing interfaces. This website is using a security service to protect itself from online attacks.

Linear perspective is based on the regular geometric recession of space. The vanishing point is the spot where all receding lines seem to converge on the horizon line. A design is a governing plan or approach by which various parts of an artwork are created and assembled. It is rare to find a work of art that is entirely accidental or has come wholly out of the unconscious intuition of an artist.

Additive color, or transmission color, occurs when light of different colors is projected. (Figure 2.51) When red and green lights overlap, yellow is seen. When red and blue lights overlap, ma- genta is seen, and when green and blue lights overlap, cyan appears. When red, green, and blue lights all overlap, white light is seen. Tele- vision screens are actually tiny dots, or pixels, of red, green, and blue glowing lights. Subtractive color mixing starts with the primary colors of red, yellow, and blue.

Literature on design principles

It is a powerful tool for drawing the viewer's attention to specific parts of a design. In graphic design, white space (a form of negative space) is strategically used to improve readability and highlight important information. Additionally, in both digital and physical design, white space is essential for creating breathing room and focus, allowing the viewer's eye to rest and navigate the design with ease.

Lighting plays a critical role in this sense of spaciousness, with a combination of recessed and hanging fixtures that illuminate without encroaching on the vertical expanse. These accessories are placed with consideration, often forming geometric arrangements or mirroring the lines of the surrounding architecture, reinforcing the room’s visual coherence. The hues and patterns of these rugs are carefully selected to resonate with the larger color scheme, subtly reinforcing the designated functions of each area. The rugs are thoughtfully positioned, not only to delineate spaces within an open floor plan but to also provide a textural contrast to the sleek hardwood flooring. Their borders align with key pieces of furniture, anchoring seating arrangements and creating intimate islands of relaxation.

Be sure to select shades from your color palette that balance each other out. For example, if you’re using typography, be consistent by selecting not more than two fonts to use across one design. If everything stands out, nothing stands out, so you can see hierarchy as a way of prioritizing objects in your design. It’s used to show the relationship between elements and guides the eye along a specific order. Negative space is also called white space, which helps to group and organize elements. Use white space wisely to create a layout that doesn’t overwhelm viewers and gives their eyes places to rest.

Material Design works by creating a sense physical cards existing within a three dimensional space. Google accomplishes this mostly through, you guessed it, shading and perspective. Ever since the great Renaissance painters began employing perspective in their works, humans have been using Form to manipulate our visual perception of space.

Shapes make up all objects, and all elements of design are shapes in a way. Rather than using actual three-dimensional shapes to generate form, graphic designers create the illusion of form on a flat surface. Graphic designers rely on these design elements to produce images that resonate with the viewers, drawing their attention to the particular message the image is trying to communicate.

Emphasis

They can have different directions such as vertical, horizontal, diagonal, curved, or move up and down across a page in a zigzag pattern. Unity can also reveal symbolism to the viewer, creating a subjective experience that is unique to the viewer. Visual weight ensures things are evenly distributed, like this image of a beach with water and trees. There's enough balance throughout, thanks to the clouds and reflection in the water. For instance, if the flowers were faded and turning brown and the robot was dull and rusted. But instead, the bright colors help paint a scene that is innocent and welcoming.

You can make these geometric forms by hand or with CAD software. A good design communicates ideas, evokes emotions, and captures the viewer's attention. For you to make such good designs, there are fundamental elements that the designer must be conversant with.

“KISS” (“Keep It Simple Stupid”) is an example of a principle where you design for non-experts and therefore minimize any confusion your users may experience. Our RGB model of additive color is directly dependent on how human eyes function. The human retina is a sheet of neurons that coats the inside of the eye. Within this sheet of neurons, there are specialized neurons called rods and cones. Rods are neurons that are sensitive to changes in light intensity, and cones are sensitive to red, green, or blue light.

For this reason, shapes are crucial elements that we designers use for quick and effective communication. Hierarchy in design refers to the arrangement of elements in a way that signifies importance. It guides viewers' eyes, ensuring they focus on primary information first, followed by secondary and tertiary details. Designers establish a visual hierarchy by employing size, contrast, color, and spacing, directing attention and aiding comprehension.

The points in this image form the start and end of all the lines, including the mountains, clouds, and the moon. Line in the form of maps is readily recognized as a symbolic representation of a place. It may be a carefully measured representation, or a stylized diagram, such as a subway map.

Form is one of the 7 Elements of Visual Design, and part of the longer list of Elements and Principles of Visual Design. When it comes to UX, UI and web design, these are essential tools to have in your skillset. By shading with different tints, three quadrilateral Shape elements instantly become a recognizable cube with Form and Mass. And finally, your design can have one of these two color systems – CMYK or RGB. To choose the right one for your art, you need to first analyze where it’ll be used. It’s usually used to divide the content of your design or website, to frame a composition, and well… it does have many options for usage.

Your design can show a feeling of visual harmony, clarity, and visual hierarchy within compositions by purposefully using negative space. In digital design, you should see the form as the object you are designing for. For example, if what you are creating is a camera, the camera is your form.

1503-Elements of a Design Patent Application Filed Under 35 U S.C. chapter 16

design patent example

Without the required documents, your application won't go through quickly — possibly not at all. A Provisional Patent is a temporary “patent” in which you declare your invention and intention to file a patent within one year, and a provisional patent is granted as a placeholder until you file a formal patent application. For instance, if you have created an artistic design and want to apply it to different uses — i.e. clothing, belts, and shoes, you would need to file a separate design patent for each. As you can see in the example from the patent above, there are quite a few related patents for hats. In this application, 19 patents were cited, stretching back all the way to 1918. This would have happened during the review process and included in the application’s final revisions.

Design Patent: Definition, How It Works, Examples

You must also note whether you relied on any federal research or development to create your invention. Remember, a design patent covers an exact appearance and unique structure. Similar patents can be present, but a company can't infringe on a design patent that already exists by making something that closely looks like a competitor's product. Digital design patents cover icons, fonts, and screen layouts for apps and software programs.

¶ 15.50.02 Description of Broken Lines (Ch. 16 Design

These actions almost always shorten the period within which a response can be filed without paying extension-of-time fees. The shortened period is typically either two or three months, depending on the type of office action. A working model may be requested in applications for alleged perpetual motion devices. The genes, traits, and parts of a plant, as well as varieties, may also be protected with a utility patent. The Plant Variety Protection Office (PVPO) provides intellectual property protection to breeders of new varieties of sexually reproduced, tuber propagated, and asexually reproduced plant varieties. With reference to tuber propagated plants, for which a plant patent cannot be obtained, the term "tuber" is used in its narrow horticultural sense as meaning a short, thickened portion of an underground branch.

Search for patents and prior art

A portfolio of design patents can be particularly appealing to potential buyers or investors, as it represents a competitive edge that can be leveraged for years to come. Once your application packet is ready, it’s time to submit it to the USPTO. This can be done online, making the submission process relatively straightforward. Along with your application, you’ll need to pay the filing fees, which vary depending on the type of applicant (e.g., individual, small business, large corporation). A design patent helps you stand out in a saturated market, adds value to your product, and can even be a significant revenue stream. Think about it – every time someone tries to copy your design, they’re infringing on your patent, and that’s a legal battle they’re likely to lose, putting money back in your pocket for your creativity.

How do you take this legal recognition of your creativity and turn it into a tangible advantage in the market? Here, we’ll dive into some examples and tactical advice on making the most of your design patent. After submission, your application enters the review queue at the USPTO. A patent examiner will review your application to ensure it meets all the criteria for a design patent. If the examiner has any questions or requires clarifications, they will issue an office action, to which you’ll need to respond. This back-and-forth can be crucial in the final decision on your patent application.

In other words, design patents provide meaningful protection to a product's design when the design was developed for the purpose of creating an ornamental look to a product. If the design was selected for a product because that designed worked better, or cost less to make, then a design patent will not protect that product's design. A design patent is typically easier, quicker, and cheaper to get than a utility patent; however, the protections offered by a design patent are much more limited than those of a utility patent.

When a complete design patent application, along with the appropriate filing fee, is received by the Office, it is assigned an Application Number and a Filing Date. A "Filing Receipt" containing this information is sent to the applicant. The drawings or photographs should contain a sufficient number of views to completely disclose the appearance of the claimed design, i.e., front, rear, right and left sides, top and bottom.

Description of Figures

You then have up to 12 months to file a nonprovisional application, as described above. The claimed subject matter in the later-filed nonprovisional application is entitled to the benefit of the filing date of the provisional application if it has support (sufficiently disclosed) in the provisional application. Patent laws provide for the granting of design patents to anyone who has invented a new, original ornamental design for an article of manufacture.

design patent example

Step 2: Conduct a Thorough Search

design patent example

The text of all pending claims not being currently amended shall be presented in the claim listing in clean version, i.e., without any markings in the presentation of text. (3) Numbers, letters, and reference characters must measure at least .32 cm. They should not be placed in the drawing so as to interfere with its comprehension. When necessary, such as indicating a surface or cross section, a reference character may be underlined and a blank space may be left in the hatching or shading where the character occurs so that it appears distinct. Drawings submitted to the Office must be made on paper, which is flexible, strong, white, smooth, non-shiny, and durable. Each sheet must be reasonably free from erasures and must be free from alterations, overwritings, and interlineations.

However, there is a deadline for filing an application for a design patent. If you release your design on a public scale, you will have a 12-month period to submit an application. If you fail to file that application within the time frame, you lose the chance to file for a design patent. A design patent example is a document you can review before filing a design patent application. They rely on words and images to convey how a design for a manufactured item is non-obvious and new. In a design patent application, the figures are the most important part.

However, the strategy behind obtaining and leveraging design patents varies by sector, influenced by product lifecycle, market dynamics, and consumer preferences. Securing a design patent is a testament to your creativity and innovation. It not only protects your unique designs from being copied but also elevates your product’s value in the market.

If an application data sheet is provided, the application data sheet is part of the provisional or nonprovisional application for which it has been submitted. Patentability shall not be negatived by the manner in which the invention was made. A separation and a bracket may be used in an enlarged view when the full length of the article is shown in another view. Alternatively, when the article is consistently shown in the views with a break, the claim will be understood to be directed only to the design for the portions of the molding that are shown. A description in the specification must explain that the appearance of any portion of the article between the break lines forms no part of the claimed design.

Small businesses and start-ups are more vulnerable to these entities because they often lack the legal knowledge to properly patent and protect their ideas before promotion or going to market. When publication of an application or granting of a patent would be detrimental to national security, the Commissioner for Patents will order it be kept secret and withhold publication or granting as long as required. The owner of an application under a secrecy order has the right to appeal to the Secretary of Commerce (35 U.S.C. 181). If no reply is received within the time period, the application is considered abandoned and no longer pending. But if the failure to prosecute is shown to be unintentional, the application may be revived upon approval of a request to the USPTO Director. An extension-of-time fee is normally required, the amount depending on the length of the extension.

Various programs and initiatives are available in certain circumstances to speed up the process. Missing information or items results in an official letter from the USPTO notifying you of what’s missing. Once your application is accepted as complete, it will be assigned for examination.

The original numbering of the claims must be preserved throughout prosecution. When claims are canceled, the remaining claims must not be renumbered. Claims added by amendment or substituted for canceled claims must be numbered consecutively beginning with the number following the highest-numbered claim previously presented.

The requirements for getting a design patent are just like that of the utility patent. It cannot be so similar to the prior art otherwise it will be rejected. There is a specific process that should be taken to file a design patent application properly. I’ve laid out the details here in an easy-to-follow 10 step format on how to patent a design.

Since then they have been scaring people for almost 50 years, with all of their different spooky attractions. In total they have five main attractions that one may visit, which change every year, with the help of volunteers who work there.

What is a Wireframe? Guide With Types, Benefits & Tips 2023

what is wireframe design

When you use one tool or system from the start, it’ll be easier to work on iterations and edits. The editor includes a library of wireframe elements like image placeholders, simple typography, line icons and more. There’s no limit to the number of pages or slides in your wireframe project. Digital wireframes like this one are a perfect starting point. This wireframe diagram captures all the pages of your website on a single canvas.

Differentiating Wireframes From Prototypes and Mockups

The content is the muscle (and can be as meaty or trim as you want). This barebones style makes wireframes a great tool early on, giving you time to cement your content architecture before diving into the details. Moreover, their simplicity is forgiving of mistakes and allows you to experiment, which takes some of the hassle out of designing the overall structure.

Refining Your Wireframing Process

It adds more detail than a low-fi wireframe, acting as more of a prototype for the final design. It gives designers the chance to see exactly how the user interface will look and how users will interact with it. Designers can see the website from the perspective of a real visitor, allowing them to pinpoint any technical errors or glitches that could impact the user experience.

What tools are used to create wireframes?

What separates design systems from past style guide approaches? Design systems can define and incorporate web element form, function and behavior. They do it more efficiently, using shared working code and pattern libraries. A step up from style guides, design systems best define a web application’s entire working look and feel.

What is Wireframing in UX?

For example, a primary button compared with a secondary one; or a set of different menu tabs. Adding any more detail to wireframes can be counterproductive and time-consuming. It can confuse teams, spawn creative bias, and even derail the final design from its intended outcome.

what is wireframe design

Low-fidelity wireframes are important for determining what graphical elements need to be created and what copy needs to be written. Before your team writes any code or allocates heavy resources to build a project, it’s important that everyone aligns on what they’re building. Using a wireframe helps everyone understand and communicate/explain what you’re trying to achieve. By framing your design concept in a minimalistic structural design, you can to make quick adjustments. Plus, you can give everyone an idea of how your future design will look. Best of all, it means you can share your ideas early, without worrying about more complex design elements like colors, shading or intricate menus.

Share your wireframe with stakeholders

Did you know the average UX recruiter spends less than 5 minutes skimming through your UX portfolio? If you want to join the growing and well-paid field of UX design, not only do you need a UX portfolio—you’ll need a great UX portfolio that showcases relevant skills and knowledge. Your UX portfolio will help you get your first job interviews and freelance clients, and it will also force you to stay relevant in your UX career. In other words, no matter what point you’re at in your UX career, you’re going to need a UX portfolio that’s in tip-top condition. While businesses have objectives and developers focus on feasibility, you advocate for a user-centered design.

It brings the product to life, showing the full flow, alongside real content and the final copy. Prototypes range in their level of sophistication, from elaborate website mockups to UX prototypes created with code, that truly behave and feel like the actual product. Low-fidelity wireframes are very rough sketches that are not drawn to scale. They are not meant to look polished; they are simply used to start discussing the product, strategize on user flow, and make decisions.

A user experience design wireframe (also called a user flow diagram) focuses on how a user moves through a particular product or service. The diagram shows the pathways they take and how they interact with your product or service when trying to complete a certain task. UX designers need to consider how users will navigate the page.

They can iterate with the client to get the right creative direction up front, before the heavy lifting happens with coding and art design. A high-fidelity mockup would then finalize the visuals that are incorporated into a new prototype. A series of rapid prototyping (multiple quick prototypes that integrate feedback with each iteration) prepares the product for its final stages in coded development. Initial sketching eliminates some of the less promising ideas prior to wireframing.

what is wireframe design

They are also very easy to change by merely sketching over them. As a designer, you’ll probably create wireframes multiple times throughout each product development phase on every project throughout your career. Learning the lingo, the process and the expectations of wireframes is useful. Some designers like to continue sketching wireframes by hand using a blank sheet of computer paper, or dot grid journals.

” It is an attempt to empathize with the needs and desires of current or potential users through in-depth interviews and close observation. Even worse… More design detail in wireframes can result in design confusion for developers trying to interpret these. When you sign up you will get a free, unlimited access to all features of Wireframe.cc Premium. After 7 days you will be asked to pick a paid plan that works for you. Your projects will not be deleted even if you decide not to do that - you can come back any time.

If anything is missing or there are areas for improvement, the designers can make changes before going live. Wireframing is a process where designers draw overviews of interactive products to establish the structure and flow of possible design solutions. Paper or software-rendered wireframes help teams and stakeholders ideate toward optimal, user-focused prototypes and products. In order to test your product solution in Uizard, you can use Wireframe Scanner to upload several hand-drawn sketches and create interactions between each design screen.

It’s an important part of the design workflow that determines the success of the entire project. Similar components should look the same across all wireframes, so they're easy to grasp, iterate on, and code. Even if there’s a slight variation between two related components, different designs can create uncertainty for developers across pages and iterations. An effective wireframe can be as simple as a napkin sketch or as complex as a static product mockup.

Whether you're a seasoned UX designer or just embarking on your journey, mastering the art of wireframing is a crucial step toward creating impactful digital experiences. By sketching initial layout ideas, you encapsulate your user’s journey visually, forming a blueprint ripe with potential. Peering into the backbone of a wireframe requires a discerning eye, one that you, as a web designer or website builder, will need to fine-tune and focus on understanding its core components. Wireframes help you identify and evaluate user flows so that everyone on your team understands how the visitor should interact with each page on your site.

Designers have lots of advanced wireframing tools and programs at their fingertips. In simple terms, wireframes are visual representations of a web page or app interface, stripped down to its bare bones. Think of it as the architectural blueprint of your design project. They outline the structure and functionality of your product without getting caught up in colors, visuals, or specific content. They provide the basic visuals of the design, but lack scale, grid, or pixel accuracy. You’ll find simple images, block shapes, and placeholder text in this wireframe.

Events from May 1 December 12, 2023 Committee on Homeland Security

Impeachment rules generally allow the Senate majority to decide how to manage the trial, and Schumer has not said exactly what he will do. House Speaker Mike Johnson will send articles of impeachment against Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas to the Senate after Congress returns. (1) The Committee on Homeland Security shall review all Government activities relating to homeland security, including interaction of all departments and agencies with the Department of Homeland Security.

House GOP Holds Second Impeachment Hearing Against Homeland Secretary

The panel swiftly held a pair of hearings in January before announcing the two articles of impeachment against Mayorkas. Sen. Sherrod Brown, a Democrat who is facing a tough reelection bid in Ohio, called the impeachment trial a “distraction,” arguing that Republicans should instead support a bipartisan border compromise they scuttled earlier this year. At a news conference with a group of Republican senators after the articles were delivered, the impeachment managers demanded that Schumer move forward with their case.

User Clip: Rep. Strong

Since then, Johnson has delayed sending the articles to the Senate for weeks while both chambers finished work on government funding legislation and took a two-week recess. Johnson had said he would send them to the Senate last week, but he delayed again after Senate Republicans said they wanted more time to prepare. Majority Democrats have said the GOP case against Mayorkas doesn’t rise to the “high crimes and misdemeanors” laid out as a bar for impeachment in the Constitution, and Schumer probably has enough votes to end the trial immediately if he decides to do so. The House Homeland Security Committee chairman, Mark Green, a Tennessee Republican who is one of the impeachment managers, read the articles aloud as most senators sat in their seats, following along with their own paper copies. Chairman Mark Green’s commitment to defending the homeland began long before his swearing-in to Congress, as he served our nation as a decorated U.S. Thompson said evidence throughout the hearings will show that Mayorkas is, in fact, doing his job.

Republican Members

Unlike other moments in impeachment history, the afternoon’s debate played out to an almost empty chamber, without the fervor or solemnity of past proceedings. The impeachment of Mayorkas landed quickly onto the House agenda after Republican efforts to impeach Biden over the business dealings of his son, Hunter Biden, hit a lull, and the investigation into the Biden family dragged. Record numbers of people have been arriving at the southern border, many fleeing countries around the world, in what Mayorkas calls an era of global migration. Many migrants are claiming asylum and being conditionally released into the U.S., arriving in cities that are underequipped to provide housing and other aid while they await judicial proceedings which can take years to determine whether they may remain. WASHINGTON (AP) — In a dramatic setback, House Republicans failed to impeach Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas, forced to shelve a high-profile priority — for now — after a few GOP lawmakers refused to go along with the party’s plan. In a dramatic setback, House Republicans fail to impeach Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas after a few GOP lawmakers refused to go along.

"Today's decision by the Senate to reject House Republicans' baseless attacks on Secretary Mayorkas proves definitively that there was no evidence or Constitutional grounds to justify impeachment," said Department of Homeland Security spokesperson Mia Ehrenberg. He said Mayorkas was "probably the least effective and I think most dangerous, in terms of his policy implementations, of any cabinet secretary in the history of the United States." Johnson predicted there would be a "reckoning" over the border issue in the November election. In response, House Oversight Chair Carolyn Maloney and Homeland Security Chair Bennie Thompson sent a letter Tuesday demanding Cuffari turn over documents and make his staff available to lawmakers or risk facing a potential congressional subpoena.

The committee was made permanent when it was elevated to standing status by a vote of the House of Representatives on January 4, 2005, on the opening day of the 109th Congress, again with Rep. Chris Cox as its first permanent chairman. Rep. Bennie Thompson of Mississippi was the committee's first permanent ranking member. After Chairman Cox resigned from Congress in July 2005 to become the Chairman of the Securities and Exchange Commission, Rep. Peter King of New York served as chairman for the remainder of the 109th Congress. This is an unprecedented failure by the Senate to do its duty, which, for the first time in our history, has outright refused to conduct an impeachment trial when given the opportunity to do so. In light of this, Chairman Arrington and Representative Bergman’s letter to GAO asked if the Biden Administration violated the law by blocking the use of funds intended to continue the construction of border barriers.

Following the hearing, members of the Committee, who were designated as impeachment managers, delivered two articles of impeachment against Secretary Mayorkas from the House of Representatives to the Senate. –– This week, the House Committee on Homeland Security, led by Chairman Mark E. Green, MD (R-TN), held a hearing to examine the Department of Homeland Security’s (DHS) woefully inadequate Fiscal Year (FY) 2025 budget request. The Committee received testimony from DHS Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas, who made his first appearance before the Committee following his historic impeachment for high crimes and misdemeanors in February. Not since 1876 has a Cabinet secretary faced impeachment charges and it’s the first time a sitting secretary is being impeached — 148 years ago, Secretary of War William Belknap resigned just before the vote.

The erasure of the messages has raised the prospect of lost evidence that could shed further light on then-President Trump’s actions during the insurrection, particularly after testimony about his confrontation with security as he tried to join supporters at the Capitol. There are now two congressional probes into the Secret Service and the Department of Homeland Security’s handling of those communications. Greene, who was named to be one of the impeachment managers if there is a Senate trial, rose to blame Mayorkas for the “invasion” of migrants coming to the U.S. The outcome was another dismal result for the House Republicans who have repeatedly been unable to use their majority power to accomplish political goals, or even to keep up with the basics of governing. In any case, Republicans would not be able to win the support of the two-thirds of the Senate that is needed to convict and remove Mayorkas from office. Democrats control the Senate, 51 to 49, and they appear to be united against the impeachment effort.

Secretary Mayorkas and FBI Director Wray Testify on Global Threats, Part 2

The articles charged Mayorkas with willfully ignoring the law and breaching the public's trust. Democrats called the opposition a policy dispute, and said it did not rise to "high crimes and misdemeanors," as required for impeachment. The stunning roll call Tuesday fell just a single vote short of impeaching Mayorkas, stalling the Republicans’ drive to punish the Biden administration over its handling of the U.S-Mexico border.

Another day, another violent criminal in the U.S. because of the Biden Admin's open border.

But ultimately they cannot block a dismissal if majority Democrats have the votes. South Dakota Sen. John Thune, the Senate’s No. 2 Republican, has said the Senate needs to hold a full trial at which it can examine the evidence against Mayorkas and come to a conclusion. The House has voted to impeach Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro N. Mayorkas over the Biden administration’s handling of the U.S.-Mexico border. (2) In addition, the Committee shall review and study on a primary and continuing basis all Government activities, programs, and organizations related to homeland security that fall within its primary legislative jurisdiction.

With Democrats united against the charges, the Republicans needed almost every vote from their slim majority to approve the articles of impeachment. But impeaching a Cabinet secretary is rare, having only happened once before in the nation’s history when the House impeached Defense Secretary William Belknap in 1876 over receiving kickbacks in government contracts. Going after an official for a policy dispute, in this instance over the claim that Mayorkas is not upholding immigration laws, is unprecedented.

Many Republicans blame Biden for taking actions to stop construction of the border wall and end the COVID-19 era restrictions that prevented many migrants from entering the U.S. Both policies had been championed by former President Trump, who is now the front-runner for the party’s 2024 presidential nomination. The Biden administration said the Democratic-led Senate made the right call and dismissed Republican efforts to attack Mayorkas unfounded. House Speaker Mike Johnson told reporters he was "deeply disappointed" that the Senate dismissed the charges, saying "there should have been a full trial." The Secret Service has since turned over a large number of records and documents to the committee investigating the Capitol insurrection, but only one text message between agents on the day before the attack and as a mob of rioters breached the Capitol building on Jan. 6. The missing texts are also at the center of the House committee investigating the Jan. 6 attack, of which Thompson is the chairman.

Additionally, the committee has authorization and policy oversight responsibilities over the Department of Homeland Security. House Homeland Security Committee Chairman Mark Green, R-Tenn., Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene, R-Ga., and their fellow Republican impeachment managers walk back through the U.S. Capitol Rotunda after transmitting articles of impeachment against Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas to the Senate on Tuesday. Tuesday’s vote arrived at a politically odd juncture for Mayorkas, who has been negotiating a bipartisan border security package in the Senate, earning high marks from a group of senators involved. At a trial, senators would be forced to sit in their seats for the duration while the House impeachment managers and lawyers representing Mayorkas make their cases. The Senate is allowed to call witnesses, as well, if it so decides, and it can ask questions of both sides after the opening arguments are finished.

If the Senate were to proceed to an impeachment trial, it would be the third in five years. Democrats impeached President Trump twice, once over his dealings with Ukraine and a second time in the days after the Jan. 6, 2021, attack on the Capitol. Some Republicans have said they would like time to debate whether Mayorkas should be impeached, even though debate time is usually not included in impeachment proceedings. Negotiations were underway between the two parties over whether Schumer may allow that time and give senators in both parties a chance to discuss the impeachment before it is dismissed.

Sen. Mitt Romney (R-Utah) said last week he wasn’t sure what he would do if there were a move to dismiss the trial. “I think it’s virtually certain that there will not be the conviction of someone when the constitutional test has not been met,” he said. After the jurors are sworn in, Senate Republicans are likely to try to raise a series of objections if Schumer calls a vote to dismiss or table.

Office of the Secretary

"Anytime the House would want to just shut the Senate down, they could send over another impeachment resolution." “Your obstruction of the Committees’ investigations is unacceptable, and your justifications for this noncompliance appear to reflect a fundamental misunderstanding of Congress’s authority and your duties as an Inspector General,” Maloney and Thompson wrote in the letter. Johnson, who could afford only a few defections from his ranks, had said earlier he had personally spoken to Gallagher and another GOP holdout, acknowledging the “heavy, heavy” vote as he sought their support. While most Republicans oppose quick dismissal, some have hinted they could vote with Democrats. The Committee was first formed as a Select, non-permanent Committee to provide Congressional oversight over the development of the Department of Homeland Security. The Committee was made permanent when it was designated as a Standing Committee of the House on January 4, 2005, the first day of the 109th Congress.

Speaker of the House: Rep. Mike Johnson

The lack of enforcement and operation control at our southwest border under the Biden Administration is simply a dereliction of duty. The fact of the matter is that American taxpayer dollars to secure the border are going unspent or wasted on frivolous environmental planning and remediation. “The evidence documented throughout this report will demonstrate that Mayorkas has been, and continues to be, derelict in the solemn duty to secure the nation’s borders,” the panel’s initial report said. Marching ahead with multiple impeachment plans, House Republicans set their sights Wednesday on Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas, whom they intend to prove is “derelict in his duty” over handling the surge of migrants at the U.S.-Mexico border.

Oversight, Investigations & Accountability

Experts have argued that Mayorkas has simply been snared in a policy dispute with Republicans who disapprove of the Biden administration’s approach to the border situation. Even if Republicans are able to impeach Mayorkas, he is not expected to be convicted in a Senate trial since Republican senators have been cool to the effort. The Senate could simply refer the matter to a committee for its own investigation, delaying immediate action.

If the House agrees to impeach Mayorkas, the case would go to trial in the Senate, where it takes a supermajority to convict. As the House proceeds with its various impeachment inquiries, not all Republicans have been eager for the undertakings. Sen. James Lankford, the chief GOP negotiator of the border package, who has been in almost daily negotiations involving Mayorkas, said he understands his colleagues’ frustrations. "If we allowed that to happen, it would set a disastrous precedent for Congress," he said.

While the Senate is obligated to hold a trial under the rules of impeachment once the charges are walked across the Capitol, the proceedings may not last long. Democrats are expected to try to dismiss or table the charges later this week before the full arguments get underway. The second select committee was formed in 2003 at the beginning of the 108th Congress as a select committee with Rep. Christopher Cox of California as its chairman and Jim Turner of Texas as its ranking member. The creation of the committee was necessitated by the creation of the Department of Homeland Security. As an executive branch department, the newly formed Department of Homeland Security required congressional counterparts to facilitate legislative action and oversight.

Congressional Partners

As Congress switched parties at the beginning of the 110th Congress, Rep. Thompson became the chairman of the committee and Rep. King the ranking member. House control switched parties again at the beginning of the 112th Congress in 2011, and King again became the chairman, and Thompson the ranking member. As the House switched parties at the beginning of the 116th Congress, Thompson again assumed the chair. The committee continues to operate in a bipartisan manner, passing almost all of its legislation out of the committee unanimously.

While the GAO report may show that the Biden Administration has not explicitly broken the law, it does show that DHS and the White House are circumventing the law to shirk executive responsibility and accountability. As per DHS, these massive reductions in illegal immigration are due solely to the construction of physical barriers. The barriers force migrants to go to ports of entry where they can be processed by Customs and Border Protection agents, avoid dangerous cartels, and have the potential to enter the U.S. legally. It remains to be seen if the House investigation will convince lawmakers that Mayorkas’ conduct rises to the level of the “high crimes and misdemeanors” the Constitution specifies for impeachment. With the House GOP’s impeachment inquiry into President Biden, over his son Hunter Biden’s business dealings, lumbering along as lawmakers work to dig up information, the Republicans are sharpening their focus on the border crossings and the investigation of Mayorkas.

In a press conference after the trial, Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer, D-N.Y., said he felt "very strongly that we had to set a precedent that impeachment should never be used to settle policy disagreements." "By doing what we just did, we have in effect, ignored the directions of the House, which were to have a trial," said Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell after senators killed the second article. They gave his office until Aug. 23 to provide “all responsive documents” and make personnel available for interviews before lawmakers issue a congressional subpoena.

When the Secretary attempted to shift the blame to Congress, members reiterated that the Senate has not taken up or passed House Republicans’ H.R.2, the Secure the Border Act, which is the strongest border security legislation passed by Congress in history. If Democrats are unable to dismiss or table the articles, they could follow the precedent of several impeachment trials for federal judges over the last century and hold a vote to create a trial committee that would investigate the charges. While there is sufficient precedent for this approach, Democrats may prefer to end the process completely, especially in a presidential election year when immigration and border security are top issues. The House narrowly voted in February to impeach Mayorkas for his handling of the U.S.-Mexico border. House Republicans charged in two articles of impeachment that Mayorkas has not only refused to enforce existing law but also breached the public trust by lying to Congress and saying the border was secure.

House impeachment managers previewed some of their arguments at a hearing with Mayorkas on Tuesday morning on President Biden’s budget request for the department. Congress formally established the Homeland Security Committee as a standing committee in 2005 to ensure that the American people were protected from terrorist attacks. The committee focuses on legislation and oversight related to the security of the United States. The Committee Rules can be found here. The People’s House has done our job & delivered articles of impeachment against Secretary Mayorkas to the Senate.I am disappointed that Senate Democrats unanimously voted to bypass their Constitutional duty & ultimately endorsed this administration's dangerous border policies.

Senators struggled with certain differences, particularly over parole programs to allow immigrants who claim asylum entry into the U.S. as they await court proceedings. Reaching a border deal is key to a broader funding package for Ukraine, Israel and other national security needs. The Homeland Security Department released a memo noting that Mayorkas and the bipartisan senators are working hard to find “real solutions” to fix broken immigration laws while the House majority is wasting time on “baseless and pointless political attacks” by trying to impeach him. The committee conducts oversight and handles legislation (and resolutions) related to the security of the United States. It also has the power to hold hearings, conduct investigations, and subpoena witnesses.

Information about all receipts and expenditures of representatives, committees, leadership, and officers of the House. That’s a question we’ll have to get answered,” said Sen. John Thune, the second-ranking GOP leader in the Senate. During Wednesday’s session, Republicans hammered away at Mayorkas’ performance, saying he’d failed to do his job detaining migrants who didn’t have the right to be in the country and allowed others to remain as they await proceedings. But any goodwill for Mayorkas has not spread to the House, where Republicans are readying their effort to remove him from office. The Homeland Security Committee plans to hold hearings throughout January with the end goal of impeaching Mayorkas.

Singleton Pattern C++ Design Patterns

singleton design pattern c

In software engineering, the singleton pattern is a design pattern that is used to restrict instantiation of a class to one object. This is useful when exactly one object is needed to coordinate actions across the system. The concept is sometimes generalized to systems that operate more efficiently when only one object exists, or that restrict the instantiation to a certain number of objects (say, five). Some consider it an anti-pattern, judging that it is overused, introduces unnecessary limitations in situations where a sole instance of a class is not actually required, and introduces global state into an application. So, both threads will enter into the if condition and create new instances.

Singleton class vs. Static methods

Though there already are many posts available on Singleton design pattern, I'll try to cover this topic in the most simplistic way and easy to understand. The article will also talk about Static classes and the differences between singleton design pattern and static classes. In the above example, the PrintSpooler class ensures that only one instance is created using the concept of lazy initialization. The GetPrintSpooler method utilizes a lock to guarantee thread safety, ensuring that only one instance is created even in multi-threaded environments. In software engineering, the singleton pattern is a software design pattern that restricts the instantiation of a class to a singular instance.

What is the purpose of singleton pattern?

Now, let's test the above VoteMachine class in the multi-threaded scenario, as shown below. The following demonstrates the testing of the VoteMachine class in the multi-threaded environment using the Parallel class. Clients may not even realize that they’re working with the same object all the time. In this article, learn what a Singleton Design Pattern is and how to implement a Singleton Pattern in C#.

Singleton Class with Lazy Instantiation

The above singleton class uses the static property to return an instance of the class. It has a private parameterless constructor which will restrict the creation of an object using the new keyword. You can make the constructor protected if you want to allow it to be inherited in a subclass. The purpose of the singleton design pattern is to ensure that a class only has one instance and provide a global point of access to it throughout the life of an application. Access of one instance is preferred to avoid unexpected results.

Singleton Design Pattern C++ Example

After getting the design patterns, It is very easy to implement and build project architecture in real-time scenarios. The design patterns make the applications Reliable, Scalable, and easily Maintainable. Implementations of the singleton pattern ensure that only one instance of the singleton class ever exists and typically provide global access to that instance. Although there can be many printers in a system, there should be only one printer spooler. How do we ensure that a class has only one instance and that the instance is easily accessible? A global variable makes an object accessible, but it doesn’t keep you from instantiating multiple objects.

First of all, we have to make our class constructor private so that we can not create objects from outside of the class using the new keyword. In this article, I will discuss the Singleton Design Pattern in C# with Examples. Please read our previous article discussing Shallow Copy and Deep Copy in C# with Examples. The Singleton Design Pattern in C# falls under the Creational Pattern Category.

The class can ensure that no other instance can be created (by intercepting requests to create new objects), and it can provide a way to access the instance. We have declared the obj volatile which ensures that multiple threads offer the obj variable correctly when it is being initialized to the Singleton instance. This method drastically reduces the overhead of calling the synchronized method every time.

The right way to implement Singleton is by dependency injection, So instead of directly depending on a singleton, you might want to consider it depending on an abstraction(e.g. an interface). I would also encourage you to use synchronization primitives(like a mutex, semaphores, etc) to control access. You must know that Singleton instance doesn't need to be manually deleted by us. We need a single object of it throughout the whole program, so at the end of program execution, it will be automatically deallocated.

The Logger class declaration

Thus I have a full control over the order of singletons creation/destruction, and also I guarantee that singletons will be created, no matter whether someone called getInstance() or not. [tl;dr] Modern C++ best practices allows an explicit and beautiful implementation of the singleton design pattern. In simple terms design patterns are practical solutions to general problems that software engineers faced during software development.

It relies on a little helper to enforce a single object at any one time (at most). To enforce a single object over program execution, remove the reset (which we find useful for tests). From this declaration, I can deduce that the instance field is initiated on the heap. What is completely unclear for me is when exactly the memory is going to be deallocated?

In one of my implementations, I called queue_ref() in AppDelegate.m (main.c would work, too). That way, queue will be initialized before any other calling object attempts to access it. Returning a value from a variable is much faster than calling a function, and then checking the value of the variable before returning it. I provide an explicit init() and term() methods for all the singletons and call them inside main.

And also, we can’t inherit this class into another class because of a private constructor. In this pattern, we have to restrict creating the instance if it is already created and use the existing one. The VoteMachine singleton class will work perfectly in the synchronous calls where each user will register their vote one by one. The following is the basic structure of the singleton class in C#. In the next article, I will discuss Why we Need to use the Sealed Keyword in the Singleton Class, as we already have a private constructor. In this article, I explain the basic concepts of the Singleton Design Pattern in C# with Examples.

Note that the performance degrades as a lock is acquired every time the instance is requested. Use thread lock before creating an object of a singleton class to make it thread-safe. The following checks whether the above Singleton class returns a single instance every time. This article will discuss the No Thread-Safe Singleton Design Pattern implementation in C#.
