Andy was devastated by the death but he sang a memorable version of “The Battle Hymn of the Republic” at Kennedy’s funeral. It’s hard to imagine there wasn’t an act like us before, because there have been so many since.
Andrew resides in a single family house in Palm Springs, CA with India. He changed record labels in 1961, moving to Columbia where he had some success with the song “Can’t Get Used to Losing You”. But singles weren’t what the listening public wanted from Andy Williams – they wanted albums. And in 1962, his Moon River & Other Great Movie Themes was released. Vertical metal louvers designed by Williams that cover the east-facing windows were later installed. The entry lobby has a floating staircase to the second floor. Behind the lobby reception desk is a large steel vault with a twin vault above it on the second floor. Enclosing the vault stack on both floors is native rock cladding; a typical Williams’s feature designed to soften the straight lines and fabricated materials. At the southwest corner of Palm Canyon Drive and Tahquitz Avenue once sat the Oasis Hotel designed by Lloyd Wright in 1923 for Palm Springs pioneer Pearl McManus. Its minimalist appearance and slip-form concrete construction made it perhaps the earliest truly modern hotel in Southern California. Following its purchase by the Western Hotels chain in 1952, the Oasis Hotel was demolished with the exception of its distinctive tower and commercial wing, which survives. In the 1940’s the firm was responsible for the auditorium, gymnasium, and library. The most impressive and important building of the three was the auditorium, which was not completed until the mid-1950s. It served as a key performance venue for the entire Coachella Valley for many years.
Rivaling Williams’ interest in golf was his enthusiasm for fine art. The singer kept a large collection in his La Quinta home and his condominium in New York City. Cunard’s Sandbar, which recently celebrated its 40th year in business, was a regular hangout of Andy’s in La Quinta. The intimate, seasonal restaurant known for its fine cuisine and wine list, live piano music, and cool, casual feel was a place where he could relax among friends. “Andy was such a down-to-earth guy and a red-blooded American patriot.” Like many of the singer’s friends, Dante met Williams years earlier through golf. Snuggled in among the Santa Rosa Mountains, La Quinta long ago earned a reputation as a destination for recreation, inspiration, and repose.
